Sean McLaughlin Named New Lenexa City Attorney
Posted on 04/13/2020
City Manager Beccy Yocham announced today that Sean McLaughlin has been appointed Lenexa’s new city attorney. This position is a member of the city manager’s senior management team and serves as an advisor to the Lenexa Governing Body, city manager and department directors.

“Sean’s passion for the City of Lenexa was apparent throughout the selection process, and I am confident that he will do an outstanding job as the next city attorney,” said Yocham.

“I am excited for this opportunity and look forward to working with the Governing Body, City staff and the community to help continue making Lenexa a great place to live, work and play,” said McLaughlin.

McLaughlin, who will begin his new role May 9, 2020, is replacing City Attorney Cindy Harmison. Harmison is retiring after serving the organization for 31 years.

McLaughlin joined the City of Lenexa in 2013 and most recently served as Assistant City Attorney III. He has extensive experience in all areas of municipal law. For the past several years, he has served as the key advisor to the City on legal issues related to planning, zoning, real estate, telecommunications and economic development.

He also served as staff co-chair for Lenexa 2040, a visioning process which will help shape the community for decades to come.

McLaughlin has an undergraduate degree in political science from Boston College and earned his juris doctorate from the University of Kansas School of Law. Prior to joining the City of Lenexa, McLaughlin worked as an attorney for H&R Block and Creative Planning, Inc. He is a graduate of the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce Leadership Lenexa program and is on the City Attorneys Association of Kansas Board of Directors, where he currently serves as treasurer.

McLaughlin, who grew up in Lenexa, now lives in our community with his wife, Meg, and their two children.

The City of Lenexa’s Legal Department has 11 professionals. The department is responsible for representing the City and its officials by handling lawsuits and claims brought by and against the City; drafting and reviewing ordinances, resolutions, contracts, bonds and other written instruments; and providing advice and legal opinions to staff and elected officials.
