Parks & Recreation lays out coronavirus reopening plans
Posted on 05/15/2020
Lenexa Parks & Recreation reopening planLenexa Parks & Recreation facilities, programs and events have been largely suspended for the last two months to help limit the spread of the new coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19). The department has worked hard to develop responsible operating plans as we aim for the safe, gradual reopening of services.

We will follow a four-phase reopening approach based on "Ad Astra: A Plan to Reopen Kansas," a report issued by the State of Kansas. Governor Laura Kelly will evaluate the state’s progress and issue orders moving the statewide baseline to the next phase. For Lenexa and other local jurisdictions, Johnson County will announce dates for the phased progression as specific public health criteria are met in our area.

Lenexa Parks & Recreation is proceeding with caution in an effort to minimize setbacks. In doing so, our plan may be more restrictive than the State of Kansas requires. The four phases reduce restrictions over time and move toward safely reopening at full capacity. We may amend the plan in response to concerns that develop as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves. It is also contingent upon having adequate resources to staff and operate services.

Our reopening plan covers parks, pools, playgrounds, facilities, festivals/events, indoor and outdoor recreation programming, rental spaces and the Lenexa Farmers Market. It details specific restrictions, occupancy limits, social distancing requirements, cleaning and sanitization practices. It also addresses expected patron and staff protocols for personal safety practices.

The Lenexa Rec Center is the only member-based amenity, and memberships remain frozen while the facility is closed. As a result, monthly memberships are not being charged, and annual memberships will be issued a credit for the duration of the closure.

During this public health crisis, our top concern continues to be the health and safety of our residents, patrons and employees. At the same time, we know the interruption in access and service has been difficult for the many people who rely on our public amenities and recreation programs for health and social benefits.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact parksandrec@lenexa.com or 913.477.7100. Thanks for your understanding and patience as Lenexa Parks & Recreation works to continue serving you.
