FAQs about applying for jobs with the City of Lenexa

Do I have to apply with a resume?

A resume is not required for some of our positions, but is highly encouraged. You may choose to upload documents, including: resumes, cover letters, references, letters of recommendations, and certifications during the application process.

Can I apply for multiple jobs?

Yes, you can apply for more than one opportunity and use the same candidate profile through our Applicant Tracking System. However, we do recommend that you apply only for those positions that align with your experience, interests, and career goals.

What happens after I apply for a position?

Immediately after you apply and submit your application for a position, you will receive email confirmation of submission. Please monitor your email (including your spam and junk folders) as future correspondence and/or instructions may be sent to you electronically.

Is a background check or credit report check required to be employed with the City?

All of the City of Lenexa job offers are contingent upon the successful completion of our pre-employment screening process, which includes a background check, if over the age of 18.

A credit report check is required of certain positions at the City that require cash handling or other financial management as noted in the job posting.

For positions in our police or fire departments, there are several additional steps involved in the background process as noted in the job posting.

Any background or credit check require you to complete a release of information and is initiated after you have accepted a conditional job offer and is managed by a third-party vendor.

Is a physical required as part of my application of employment?

Most of our positions require a base line physical if you are offered employment as part of our pre-employment screening process. Certain positions in our Municipal Services, Parks, Police and Fire Departments require candidates to undergo additional physical and agility testing. In addition, Police and Fire Department positions require pre-employment psychological assessments.

Is a drug test required as part of my application of employment?

If you are offered a position with the City you will be required to complete a post-offer drug screen when scheduled. Candidates under age 18 will need to have a minor consent form completed by a parent/legal guardian. Depending on the type of position you are offered the testing required may vary.

How will I be notified that all pre-employment steps have been completed successfully?

Staff will contact you to confirm your start date when all pre-employment processes have been completed successfully. Failure to successfully complete any portion of the pre-employment process may be grounds to rescind an employment offer.

Will you notify me when a job I applied for has been filled?

You will receive communication when you are no longer in consideration for a position you applied for – either by email or by a telephone call. If for some reason you have not heard from us for several weeks about a position, don’t hesitate to contact our HR team at [email protected].
