Home Repair Assistance

Programs are available through the City and County to help qualifying residents keep their homes safe and maintained. These programs were established to strengthen our existing neighborhoods and assist homeowners who may not be able to make needed repairs.

The City of Lenexa's Exterior Grant Program encourages owners of older residential properties with lower home values to invest in exterior improvements. The program prioritizes projects that enhance neighborhoods, especially improvements that face the street or are publicly visible.

Qualifying properties and improvements

The Exterior Grant Program is available to homes anywhere in Lenexa, both owner- and renter-occupied. To be considered for the 2024 program, a home needed be county-appraised in 2023 at or below $323,500 and be built in or before 1977. This represents homes as old or older than the citywide 25th percentile for single-family homes and valued at less than or equal to the previous year’s citywide 25th percentile for single-family residential property value.

Homeowners must invest at least $2,500 and are eligible for a 50% reimbursement up to $5,000 every 10 years.

Eligible exterior improvements include repair, replacement or addition of the following:

  • Siding, paint, masonry, windows, doors, gutters, roofs
  • Driveways and sidewalks
  • Landscaping
  • Tree replacement in conjunction with the removal of a dead or dying tree
    •  Tree must be dead or dying as determined by a certified arborist
  • Replacement decks, patios, porches
  • Retaining walls and replacement fences
  • Detached garages or other accessory structures (where allowed)
  • Solar panels (where allowed)
  • Exterior lighting
  • Removal or repair of existing pools

How to apply 

Applications for the 2024 program will be accepted March 1–April 15. Application packets will only be accepted in person or via U.S. mail at Lenexa City Hall, 17101 W. 87th St. Pkwy., Lenexa, KS 66219. Emailed application packets will not be accepted.

Interested in applying? Your application must include:

  • A completed application form.
  • Bids from a contractor or, if you’re doing the work yourself, a detailed project cost estimate. (Only submit the bids you intend to proceed with. Multiple bids for the work are not required for grant purposes.)
  • Proof of current homeowners insurance.
  • Color photos of the area on your home or property where you are proposing to make the improvements.

 You must prequalify for this program before starting work on improvements to be reimbursed.

Application review process

City staff begin to review submissions after all applications are received. A limited amount of funds are available each year. Applications will be prioritized based on property age, condition, neighborhood enhancement and whether a housing voucher is accepted.

Everyone who applies will be notified of preapproval or denial.

Johnson County: Home Rehabilitation Program

The Home Rehabilitation Program assists eligible Johnson County homeowners with home repairs and provides limited accessibility modifications for eligible persons with a disability. The program addresses repairs that, if left unattended, would have a direct impact on the health, safety or accessibility of the homeowner.

This program is administered by Johnson County, not the City of Lenexa.
