Fishing Derby at Black Hoof Park: June 12, 2021

This in-person fishing derby will be held at beautiful Lake Lenexa in Black Hoof Park for children ages 13 and under. It is a catch-and-release derby. Participants will measure their fish and then place them back in the lake.

Prizes are given to the participant with the most fish, smallest fish and largest fish. 

Advance registration by noon on June 11 is recommended, but we will take walk-up registrations the day of the event.

Pedal across Lenexa with our bikeshare partnership

The City of Lenexa has partnered with BikeWalkKC’s Ride KC Bike program to offer electric-assist bikes — also known as E-bikes — for rent.

Bikeshare hubs are located at eight City parks and locations:

  • Black Hoof Park (two hubs)
  • Central Green
  • Lenexa civic campus
  • Little Mill Creek North Park
  • Old Town Lenexa
  • Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park (two hubs)

Hubs are also located at two Johnson County Parks and Recreation District parks in Lenexa:

  • Mill Creek Streamway Park
  • Shawnee Mission Park (five hubs)

To rent a bike, download the RideKC Bike app and follow the directions to scan and check out the bike. Bikes are $1 to unlock and 10 cents per minute.

Paint small rocks with a fun design and seal with a clear coat. Then, place them in a park for others to find. You can post your creation on the Lenexa Rocks Facebook group to show off your craftsmanship and find other cool rocks around Lenexa!

Community Days Porch Parade: July 2-4, 2021

Decorate your porch in a July 4 patriotic theme or Lenexa community spirit/pride theme by the deadline. Show off your creativity and community pride while bringing a smile to your neighbors and friends.

As a registered entry, you will be added to our Porch Parade map. Entries will receive a free commemorative official entry yard sign, while supplies last.

Playground Passport 

Your kids will love discovering our fun playgrounds while figuring out the secret letter code on the Playground Passport. This activity takes place between May 1–Oct. 31. To participate:

Visit each of the 27 playgrounds listed on the Playground Passport.

Look for Playground Passport signs that list a letter and a number specific to that park.

Fill in the letter for each numbered blank space on the passport.

Outdoor pool season

The City of Lenexa is preparing to operate all three outdoor public pools this summer — Ad Astra, Flat Rock Creek and Indian Trails Aquatic Center — as long as there are no major unforeseen maintenance or physical issues.

Indian Trails Aquatic Center (8801 Greenway Ln. in Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park)

  • Opens Saturday, May 29
  • Daily hours: noon–8 p.m.
  • Remains open through Sept. 6 with reduced hours starting Aug. 2

Ad Astra Pool (8265 Maurer Rd.)

  • Opens Saturday, June 5
  • Hours: Monday–Saturday: noon–8 p.m.; Sunday: noon–6 p.m.
  • Closes for the season Aug. 1

Flat Rock Creek Pool (13120 W. 103rd St.)

  • Opens Saturday, June 12
  • Daily hours: noon–8 p.m.
  • Closes for the season Aug. 1

Lenexa Freedom Run: July 3, 2021

Start Independence Day early with a 5K or 10K at the Lenexa Freedom Run. This is a family-friendly event with more than 1,300 participants. We welcome runners, walkers and strollers in the race.

Both the 5K and 10K courses are USATF-certified courses.

Lenexa Run Club (Lenexa Rec Center)

Let's tackle some miles together! Join the Lenexa Run Club. We meet on Mondays at 6 p.m. from March 15–Nov. 1, 2021. The starting runs feature a 5K within walking distance of the Lenexa Rec Center. All fitness levels are welcome, including walkers.

Starting a new fitness routine? It’s always great to measure yourself and track your progress along the way. Let us help you succeed with a FREE quarterly fitness checkup from 10–11:30 a.m. on April 24, July 10 and Oct. 2, 2021.

Drop by for 15–30 minutes. Certified personal trainers will be on hand to check your weight, percent body fat, situp test, pushup test, plank test, 40-yard dash time.

This is a FREE community event. No membership required or RSVP needed. First come, first served.
