Community Development Block Grant

Keeping our neighborhoods in good shape and supporting low-to-moderate income residents in our community is a priority for us, and one of the ways we do that is through the Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG), funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Once Lenexa reached 50,000 residents, we began directly receiving funding through the CDBG program to benefit low-to-moderate income households and support decent housing, suitable living environments and expanded economic opportunities. In previous years, our CDBG program was administered through Johnson County where we had to compete for funding every other year with other communities.

We conducted research about the community and invited you to give input on what the priorities for our program should be. With that information, we created a five-year strategic plan with the following objectives:

  1. Sustain affordable housing opportunities by preserving the existing housing stock.

  2. Improve the vitality, livability and safety of our neighborhoods through the preservation of housing stock, infrastructure improvements and community facility improvements.

  3. Support community facilities that improve the quality of life for low-to-moderate income residents.

Program implementation

The first program being funded by CDBG money is our Minor Home Repair Grant Program, which helps residents who are low-to-moderate income (as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) make exterior repairs to their homes.
