As the weather warms up, more motorcyclists will be hitting the roads to enjoy the sunshine. With this increase in motorcycle traffic, it’s important for all drivers to stay extra vigilant and share the road safely. By staying alert and driving with care, we can all do our part to prevent accidents and ensure a safe riding season for everyone.

Tips for drivers

Look twice. Motorcycles are smaller than cars and can be harder to see, especially at intersections. Always check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes or turning.

Give space. Motorcycles need room to maneuver. Allow a full lane width and maintain a safe following distance — at least four seconds behind a motorcycle.

Use your signals. Always signal your intentions early to give motorcyclists time to react.

Stay alert. Eliminate distractions like texting or adjusting your radio while driving. A momentary lapse in attention can have serious consequences.

Tips for motorcyclists

Gear up. Wear protective gear, including a helmet, gloves and bright or reflective clothing to increase visibility.

Ride defensively. Assume other drivers may not see you, and be prepared to react accordingly.

Follow traffic laws. Obey speed limits, use turn signals and avoid weaving between vehicles.

Check your bike. Before hitting the road, inspect your motorcycle for any mechanical issues, such as tire pressure, brakes and lights.
