A new property tax rebate pilot program offered by the City of Lenexa will provide property tax relief to income-eligible Lenexa homeowners who are 65 years or older or disabled veterans. The program is intended to lessen the tax burden resulting from rising home values by offering property tax rebates to eligible homeowners for the City’s share of their property taxes. The Lenexa City Council approved the pilot program at its June 4, 2024, meeting.

Applications will be accepted Aug. 1 through Oct. 31, 2024.

Every eligible applicant will receive a property tax rebate equal to a proportional share of available funds, up to 75% of the City’s share of the homeowner’s property tax bill. While the amount each applicant will be reimbursed depends on the total number of eligible applications, the City anticipates rebate amounts will range from approximately $550 to a maximum of $924.

All applications will be considered after the Oct. 31, 2024, deadline. This is not a first-come, first-served program. For the pilot year of this program, a total of $100,000 is available for reimbursement.

To be eligible, each of the following criteria must be met:

  • You must own and occupy your home in the Lenexa city limits (attached or detached).
  • You must be age 65 or older or be a disabled veteran with 100% military disability verified through a VA award letter.
  • Your home must have an appraised value less than or equal to the previous year’s city-wide median ($390,000 for the 2024 program year).  (Alternative: Have a home with a maximum 2023 appraised value of $390,000)
  • Your household income must be at or below the Very Low income limits for the Kansas City metropolitan area set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (see table).
  • Must be current on property taxes.
