Turf Maintenance Positions

How would you like to work outside in some of the most beautiful parks in the metro? Mowing is a big responsibility for us, but we do so much more. Our team maintains the turf at all City-owned areas at such a high level by following regular seeding, fertilizing and pesticide application schedules. We oversee and maintain a large irrigation system, as well as doing native prairie grass burnings.

The Turf Maintenance division works with other City divisions and departments to support the festivals and special events.

Turf job types

Seasonal

Seasonal positions last three to eight months. This position involves assisting with the general maintenance of city property. This includes the operation of major equipment and opportunities to gain general knowledge of turf maintenance practices. Work includes mowing, edging, seeding, sodding, aeration, fertilizer application, irrigation and proper watering.

Maintenance l

Maintenance I is an entry-level, full-time position with minimal experience required. Duties include all turf maintenance practices and the operation of heavy- and light-duty equipment. Opportunities include training and overseeing turf division seasonal staff.

Maintenance ll

Maintenance II employees perform similar tasks to a Maintenance I employee, but possess more advanced skills and have more leadership opportunities. Obtaining a Class B CDL and a 3B Turf Commercial Pesticide Applicators Certificate are required for this position.

Irrigation Technician

An Irrigation Technician assists with the general maintenance of City grounds. The primary responsibility is for the upkeep and maintenance of the City’s irrigation system, which consists of more than 200 acres of irrigated turf and nearly 30,000 sprinkler heads. Duties also include overseeing other turf staff.

Crew Leader

The Crew Leader is highly motivated and works directly with the turf supervisor to assist, lead, train and direct the entire turf staff. This position helps ensure that all parks are maintained at a high level and that all equipment is operating properly. This role also keeps all records and work orders accurate and up to date.

Employee training and growth

Most training will be hands-on and led by superiors, with opportunity for specialized trainings in a classroom to obtain certifications. There is a career matrix that outlines goals needed to move up from one position to another.
