Project description

Ad Astra Pool opened to the public in 1988 and has served the community for nearly 40 years. Due to the condition of the pool and ongoing maintenance challenges, it needs a complete rebuild.

The City Council approved $8 million for reconstruction of the pool. The design team will seek community input to ensure the new pool has the right mix of amenities and programming for those it serves. Based on funding, leaders are hopeful it will compare in size and features to Flat Rock Creek Pool and complement Lenexa's overall aquatics offerings.

Capital Improvement Fund: $1,000,000

Timeline

Public engagement: Summer 2024

Design: Late summer 2024 to winter 2024

Construction begins: Spring 2025 (Pool closed during 2025 season)

Opening day: May 23, 2026

Project updates

May 2024: Ad Astra Advisory Committee, comprised of three community members and two City Council representatives, meet with the design team to discuss the project and public engagement approaches.

June 2024: Lenexa Parks & Recreation and SFS Architecture host first community open house for residents to give input on amenities, design elements and programming. Residents also have the option to take an online survey. Nearly 900 people participate.

June–July 2024: SFS Architecture hosts a series of pop-up events at Lenexa's outdoor pools for patron's to give input.
