Ad Astra Pool with swimmers

Project description

Ad Astra Pool was built in 1988 and has been structurally problematic since its opening. While many investments and repairs have been made to keep this pool in operation, the ongoing and worsening conditions require it to be rebuilt to keep this location in operation. This project rebuilds Ad Astra Pool with the appropriate mix of amenities and programming to complement the nearby Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center while continuing to serve the surrounding neighborhoods and the community.

Residents gave input on the design features and amenities during a series of open houses, online surveys and pop-up events during summer 2024. Future aquatic amenities identified include:

  • Large zero–depth entry area with shade
  • Underwater bench seating
  • Three, 25–yard lap lanes for swimming
  • Deep water area with two diving boards
  • 180–foot current channel
  • Large shade areas
  • New bathhouse and concession building

Public engagement

Lenexa Parks & Recreation and SFS Architecture hosted community open houses on June 13, July 24 and Sept. 11, 2024. The first was to gather input on amenities, design elements and programming. The second was for residents to give feedback on four concepts created from the ideas shared in June. The final open house was for residents to see the final two designs and vote for their favorite as well as communicate any reservations, likes or dislikes. Each open house was also accompanied by an online survey for those unable to attend.
