Project Description

The City of Lenexa is working on a project that will transform the existing Lenexa Community Center and Senior Center campus into a vibrant, welcoming destination in Old Town. These two aging facilities will be consolidated into a single building — Lenexa Old Town Activity Center — on a dynamic campus that better serves the needs of users, the neighborhood and the community.

Improvements to the Community Center and Senior Center campus include:

  • Consolidation of buildings
  • Accessibility improvements
  • Expansion of senior program areas
  • Outdoor pickleball courts and gathering spaces
  • Restroom and locker room updates
  • Replacement of aging building façade
  • Public art investment

Construction Timeline

Schedule is subject to change. There may be intermittent disruptions to various parts of the building through construction. 

Fall 2023: Design finalized

January–October 2024:

  • Demolish Med-Act building
  • Construct new additions to the south and east sides of the Community Center
  • Renovate eastern and central areas of the building

November 2024:

  • Senior programming moves into the new Haskins wing.
  • Renovations to the west side of the building begin.
  • The former Senior Center is razed.

January 2025:

  • Renovations on the west side of the building complete.
  • Work begins on the outside area of the facility as weather permits.

Spring 2025:

  • Mural artist Evan Brown, also known as Doodle Dood, to paint a 900-square-foot mural that wraps around the west side of the building.
  • Outdoor space, featuring pickleball courts, shuffleboard courts, open turf area and an outdoor seating area complete.

April 2025: Grand opening of the Lenexa Old Town Activity Center.

Summer 2022
Conceptual design process begins.

Fall 2022
City staff and design team update City Council Oct. 11 at a Committee of the Whole meeting. Discus changing economic conditions, programming opportunities and preliminary design concepts.

Spring 2023
Schematic design underway.

Summer 2023
The Project Team provides an update at the May 16 City Council meeting on current ideas coming from the schematic design process. While plans are not final until they receive approval from the City Council, the project begins to take shape.

The Planning Commission considers the site’s building plans at its June 26 meeting, where further public comment is welcomed.

The City Council approves the project's first Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP), including various long-lead time items, and approves the construction contract with Turner Construction (August).

Winter 2023
City Council approves the project's final Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP). 

January 2024
Turner Construction begins construction.

March 2024
City Council approves a mural design at its March 5 meeting. Residents favor Doodle Dood’s proposed “Meet Me in Lenexa” mural concept during a two-month selection process. Read the news story.

November 2024
Major additions to the east side of the building are complete along with new parking on the east side. The name of the facility officially changes to Lenexa Old Town Activity Center. Senior programming moves into the new Haskins wing. Renovations on the west side of the building begin. The former Senior Center is demolished. 


Public Involvement

The building's design and future program offerings were influenced by public input during both the A New Look at Old Town Lenexa study and the Lenexa Community Center / Senior Center study.


Documents

The City of Lenexa completed a study in 2019 that explored how to rehabilitate the Community Center / Senior Center site. Consultants looked at how the current spaces are used, evaluated operational and accessibility challenges, and recommended ways to meet community recreation needs for all ages.
