Performing and visual arts scholarships

The LAC sponsors more than $3,000 in arts scholarships for Lenexa graduating seniors. Categories are visual arts, performing arts, and new in 2017, a $250 literary arts scholarship. Outside judges select scholarship winners in each category, with winners being honored in April. Applications are available in the fall for the following year's scholarships. Community Orchestra

The Lenexa Arts Council is creating a new Community Orchestra to enrich the artistic, musical and cultural climate or our city by providing family-friendly musical entertainment. We are currently seeking a Conductor to lead the efforts to establish, manage and direct the Community Orchestra. To find out more information, view the Orchestra Conductor Request for Qualifications. Deadline to respond is Dec. 9.

Poetry Reading Open Mic Nights

Come read your poetry or listen to others share their poetry at our Poetry Reading Open Mic Nights the second Saturday of the month in February, March and April. Events take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the KC Art Angels Gallery, 13416 Santa Fe Trail Drive. Hosted in partnership with KC Art Angels. We will take a break starting in May and then begin hosting poetry readings in the fall at the new Civic Center at 87th Street Parkway and Penrose. Check back later for more information. HeART of Lenexa Contest

The Art of Lenexa Contest is back with a new name and theme!
The HeART of Lenexa Contest, sponsored by the Lenexa Arts Council and initiated by a Lenexa Girl Scout as her Gold Award Project, encourages people to create and share a work of art inspired by something they love about Lenexa. We’re accepting 2D and 3D art, creative writing and videos.

Prizes will be awarded to the top entry in three different age categories:

  • 5-12
  • 13-18
  • 19+

Theatre Hikes®

Theatre HikeBlack Hoof Park, 9053 Monticello Rd., Lenexa KS
Admission: Free
Typically held the first weekend in October. Check back for information about the 2017 performance.

Bring your lawn chairs or blanket and snacks and get ready for a fun and unique experience that includes a leisurely paced hike and a live-theater play with the beautiful Black Hoof Park as the backdrop.

We'll gather at one of the park's shelters and then hike to the first location, get settled and then enjoy the first scene of the play. Then, we'll pack up, enjoy another short hike, and then watch another scene of the play, and so on. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes as we'll walk about 2 miles in all.

Art Trolley Tour

The Lenexa Arts Council partners with the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce each year to offer the Art Trolley Tour. The 2016 tour was held on July 28. Check back for information about the 2017 tour.

Children’s arts camps

The Lenexa Arts Council supports children’s art programs, such as Children’s Theatre camp offered through the Lenexa Parks & Recreation Department.

Festival musical entertainment

The Lenexa Arts Council also promotes the arts at Lenexa festivals through live musical entertainment at the annual May is Music Month Movie in the Park, Enchanted Forest and Spinach Festival.

Lenexa Outdoor Concert Series

Enjoy free outdoor concerts featuring a variety of types of music on Sunday evenings in May and June. Check back in 2017 for the schedule.
