three pieces of winning artworkThirteen area artists were honored for exceptional work inspired by what they love about Lenexa as part of the HeART of Lenexa Contest. In total, 22 artists submitted more than 30 pieces of art in a variety of media for the annual juried competition.

First-place winners in each age category won $100 awards.

First Place (ages 5–12)

Isabelle Connealy, "The Fox" (paper quilling)

“I love all of the nature in Lenexa parks but I really like seeing all of the animals. I love foxes and have seen a few in neighborhoods and parks.”

First Place (ages 13–18)

Lucy Harrison, "Falling for You" (photography)

“By the time we got to the tree, the leaves had stopped falling. So, instead of waiting for the leaves to fall again, my best friend climbed up the tree and shook one of the branches until I got the right shot. She then fell out of the tree which gave me the title for this picture, ‘Falling for You’ since not only were the leaves falling but my friend was also falling in order for me to get a good picture.”

First Place (adult age category)

Kris Coyan, "Emerging Beauty" (silver maple, cherry burl, bamboo skewers, diamond wood, ebony and Plexiglas).

“Sometimes the most beautiful things in nature emerge from the most simple of forms, much like the way the new Lenexa City Center has emerged from what was once a farmers field. What once was plain and ordinary becomes a thing of spectacular beauty.”
