The Lenexa City Council reviewed the recommended 2019 Budget during two recent work sessions. The budget workshop sessions took place on June 12 and June 26 and were open to the public.

One key consideration before the City Council is to reduce the projected property tax levy by 1.68 mills, a decrease of 5.3 percent.

“We are pleased to put forth a budget that provides the high service levels our residents count on and reduces the projected property tax mill levy,” said City Administrator Eric Wade.

The 2019 proposed expenditure budget is $120.5 million, an increase of 3.9% from the 2018 budget. These additional resources will fund an increase of $3.8 million for the general fund to support day-to-day city operations.

The number of full-time equivalent positions will increase by 4 (less than 1%) in 2019. This is primarily due to additional staffing for fee-supported activities in the new Lenexa Rec Center.

The proposed budget maintains appropriate reserve levels in all city funds. The city’s financial model reflects structural balance, with projected revenues equal to or exceeding projected expenditures for the general fund in each year of the five-year forecast period. It also continues the city’s commitment to the Governing Body’s strategic goals of providing quality city services, ensuring fiscal responsibility, promoting economic development, continuing reinvestment in the community, developing Lenexa City Center and creating a sense of community within Lenexa.

A public hearing for the recommended budget is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. at Lenexa City Hall during the regularly scheduled City Council meeting.
