Under the guidance of the Lenexa Arts Council, we offer a variety of art-related programs throughout the year. These programs span different types of art, including visual, performing, music and literary arts.
Sunflower Poetry Slam and Open Mic
Join us on Third Thursdays for an evening of creative wordplay at our
Sunflower Poetry Slams and open mic nights, hosted by Poet Jen Harris
at the Lenexa Community Forum at City Hall, 17101 W. 87th St. Pkwy.
Monthly events will be held July through December 2019. Admission for the slam and open mic are free.
**Event scheduled on Thursday, Nov. 21, is canceled.**
Open Mic begins at 6 p.m. (open mic is limited to 5 minutes on stage per
person. May be reduced to 3 minutes depending on the number of people
who sign up.)
Poetry Slam begins at 6:30 p.m. (Sign-up lists drop at 5:45 p.m. 10 slots
available first come, first served. Order chosen by random drawing.
Participants should have three items prepared. Time penalties are
incurred after 3:10 minutes. Poets are disqualified after 4 minutes; no
warning is given at the 3-minute mark. 10 slots in round 1; 5 back in
round 2; 3 back in round 3. One winner will receive a $50 prize. Judges
will be selected randomly from the audience.)
Audience participation is encouraged. Poets should be prepared as
audience interruptions will not contribute to the poet's time. (This
will be at the slam master's discretion. Fairness is the goal.)
City Center Art Walk
Join us for a walking tour to explore a variety of art in Lenexa on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, from 6 to 9 p.m. Lenexa Arts Council members will provide a guided tour starting at the Lenexa City Hall Art Gallery, followed by outdoor public displays on the Lenexa civic campus, the Lenexa City Center Library, Revocup and Gomer's.
Participants in this intimate group setting will enjoy light refreshments at City Hall and Revocup, and sample a variety of wines in a private wine tasting at Gomer's. Be prepared to walk about 0.5 mile at a leisurely pace. Must be 21+ for the wine tasting. Tickets are $10 (limited availability). Purchase tickets
Theater on the Trail
A hilarious performance combined with a leisurely hike through Black Hoof Park sounds like a perfect fall afternoon. On Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019, at 2 p.m., Shawnee Mission Northwest High School theater students, under the direction of Jason Coats, will perform "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged, Revised."
Free admission. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a lawn chair or blanket, and be prepared to walk about 2 miles.
Note: The script features some mature subject matter. Parental discretion is advised.
We honor the artists in our community each year by hosting the Lenexa Artists’ Show, which features 2D and 3D works by Lenexa residents only. This is a juried show, and our judges give awards in various categories for exceptional artwork. The 2019 Artists' Reception is sponsored by Renewal by Andersen.
Create a piece of artwork inspired by something you love about Lenexa
and you could win one of several great prizes. Deadline for submissions
is Dec. 31 of each year.
Enjoy free outdoor concerts featuring a variety of music types on Sunday evenings in May, June and September.
The Lenexa Arts Council has created a new Community Orchestra to
enrich the artistic, musical and cultural climate of our city by
providing family friendly musical entertainment. We are currently
looking for community volunteers to play in the orchestra and serve in
other volunteer positions.
Live music at festivals & events
We promote the arts through live musical entertainment at special events including Lenexa Art Fair, Enchanted Forest and the Lenexa Spinach Festival.
