Responsibilities
Review and make recommendations about planning and zoning issues in the city.
Review our Comprehensive Plan to ensure it continues to be relevant and responsive to changes in our vision, demographic trends and development patterns.
Make recommendations about rezoning, special-use permits and preliminary plan applications, which are then considered by the Lenexa City Council.
Approves final plans, with or without conditions.
Board of Zoning Appeals
The Planning Commission also serves as the Board of Zoning Appeals. They have the authority to grant variances and exceptions from the requirements of the Unified Development Code, which would allow a property to be developed in a way normally not permitted by development regulations.
This process is intended to provide relief in unique situations where strict compliance with the code would cause undue hardship for the property owner. Most often, the Board receives variance requests about setbacks, fences, accessory buildings, height of buildings and other improvements.
Lenexa City Code Section 4-1-K
Board of Zoning Appeals meetings, if scheduled, take place on the same night as regularly scheduled Planning Commission meetings.
Members
The Planning Commission has nine members who are appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the Lenexa City Council. Each planning commissioner serves a three-year term and can be reappointed to serve additional terms.
