Youth Police Academy

Officer helping a teen in a classroomThe Lenexa Youth Police Academy is a one-week summer program, offered two times each year, for teens ages 13 to 17. It is a fun, interactive learning experience designed to:

  • Teach students about law enforcement, its challenges and the philosophy of teamwork

  • Promote a greater understanding between our community’s young adults and law enforcement

  • Help students develop skills to keep themselves safe from dangers in the community.

Dates

We will offer two week-long sessions Youth Police Academy sessions this year:

  • June 5–9, 2017

  • June 12–16, 2017


Schedule & topics

The Youth Police Academy is held from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. each day during the session. We provide lunch and snacks each day.

We cover age-appropriate topics, including:

  • Patrol procedures

  • Evidence collection

  • Criminal investigation

  • Interrogations

  • Drug investigation

  • Fraud

  • Internet crime

  • The K9 Unit

  • Tactical team

  • Traffic enforcement

There will be some physical activities, including an obstacle course.


Eligibility

If you would like your child to participate, they must be at 13 to 17, have limited prior police or criminal contacts and either:  

  • Live in Lenexa

  • Attend school in Lenexa

  • Have a parent, grandparent or guardian who lives or works in Lenexa

We will conduct a minimal background check on each student.

If your child has already attended the Youth Police Academy and would like to attend again, we give priority to first-time participants. If there is space, they will be allowed to repeat the program.


Cost

There is no cost to you for your child to attend the program. We believe this program is a great tool to foster relationships with young adults in our community, so we cover all expenses, including daily lunches, a t-shirt and an ID badge.


Dress and conduct code

We expect participants to dress and act appropriately, giving respect to our instructors, fellow participants and employees of the Police Department.

We will provide your child with a Youth Police Academy t-shirt and photo ID on the first day, and we request they wear them each additional class day.

  • Blue jeans/shorts are OK, but they should hang at your child’s waist and not be torn or loose-fitting.

  • Hats/caps are not allowed.

  • No jewelry is requested.

  • Please wear tennis shoes or something similar (no sandals, flip-flops, etc.)

Electronic devices (including iPods and cameras) are prohibited, with the exception of cell phones, which should only be used during breaks.
