Internships

Two internsWe are an agency with an excellent reputation identified as a nationwide leader in the law enforcement community. ​The philosophy of our agency is to deliver the highest level of service to the community while taking every opportunity to conduct intelligent policing. If you take pride in your work and believe words like dedication, commitment, honor, pride, integrity and professionalism have meaning then we encourage you to apply for one of our internships within our agency. Both police and crime analyst internships are available.

To be eligible for consideration of an internship, you must be an active student working to complete a four-year degree and the internship is part of an assigned curriculum.

Police Internship

Our 2019 summer internships have been filled. Check back in February for 2020 summer internship details. 


Benefits

Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age, no maximum age limit

  • Currently enrolled in college and working towards a degree (doesn’t have to be Criminal Justice)

  • Must be able to perform the regular physical duties required of a police officer

  • Must commit to completing the entire five-week internship program

  • Complete a research paper by the conclusion of the internship


Automatic Disqualifiers

Drug history

  • Cannot have used marijuana in the past two years;

  • Cannot have ever sold, produced, cultivated or transported marijuana for sale

  • Cannot have used any dangerous drug in the past five years

  • Cannot have ever sold, produced, manufactured or transported a dangerous drug for sale (steroids, methamphetamine, ecstasy, PCP and psilocybin mushrooms)

  • Cannot have used a narcotic drug in the past five years

  • Cannot have ever sold, produced, transported or cultivated a narcotic drug (heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine)

  • Cannot have shown a history of prescription drug abuse in the past three years.

Driving history

  • Cannot have six or more moving violations in the past three years. If there are three to five violations in the past three years, it will be investigated further;

  • No criminal traffic violations in the past three years (DUI, reckless driving, criminal speed).

Criminal history

  • No felony convictions

  • No sexual offense convictions

  • No domestic violence or crimes of violence in the past five years

  • No misdemeanor convictions in the past year

  • No affiliation with a criminal street gang in the past three years

  • Any affiliation with a criminal street gang will require a further investigation.

Crime Analysis Internship

We are not running the Crime Analysis internship for the 2019 season. Check back for future opportunities 

The paid Crime Analysis internship program allows students the opportunity for practical, hands-on experience in the field of law enforcement. 

Interns will assist in supporting patrol and investigative efforts by supplying tactical analysis utilizing temporal and spatial analysis as well as gaining experience in administrative, strategic and operational analysis. In addition, intern development will include a police department exposure program with officer ride-alongs, shadowing communications staff, briefings/meetings and interaction with internal/external customers.

Our internship program is designed and dedicated to providing practical work experience to students through research, training, and skill development

 

Anticipated duties

Students will complete a total of 200 hours in the following areas:

  • Gathering and analyzing local and multi-jurisdictional crime data.

  • Extracting data such as arrests, accidents, and case history from numerous sources including the Records Management System (RMS).

  • Using ArcGIS as well as analytical products to geocode and analyze data.

  • Analyzing collected data to detect patterns, series, and trends.

  • Using crime data and knowledge of police programs and patrol activities to identify opportunities for proactive law enforcement.

  • Assisting in various crime analysis special projects.

Selection process

  1. Fill out the Crime Analysis intern application (when available) 

  2. Complete the Lenexa Police ​Department application packet

  3. Your application packet will be reviewed.

  4. Oral board Interview

  5. Background investigation

  6. Polygraph​

Requirements

You must be at least 18 years of age and have a GPA of 3.0 or above. We prefer our interns to be majoring in criminal justice, law enforcement or a related field.

The existence of any of the conditions listed below may result in rejection from the selection process:

We are seeking students who have a true interest in the field of law enforcement & crime analysis. Our program accepts only one intern per summer. You must have excellent communications skills, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. If you possess these attributes, we encourage you to apply.
