Get your spring lawn care off to a good start by attending the eighth annual Johnson County Healthy Yards Expo on Saturday, April 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Shawnee Civic Centre, 13817 Johnson Drive.
The Healthy Yards Expo connects residents with experts who can help them learn about environmentally conscious lawn and garden techniques. The event will feature booths from area agencies and businesses, free instructional seminars and giveaways.
Members of the Johnson County K-State Research and Extension Master Gardeners and local plant societies will offer advice on gardening and plant cultivation. Representatives from area cities, including Lenexa, will discuss local opportunities and challenges. Be sure to ask about Lenexa’s cost share program for rain barrels and rain gardens.
Expo attendees will have the chance to take home great giveaways. The first 100 visitors will receive a tree seeding from the city of Overland Park. The first 500 visitors will receive a variety of native plants from Johnson County Stormwater Management. Attendees can also register to win door prizes including rain barrels and a compost bin.
Free soil tests will be provided courtesy of Johnson County Stormwater and Johnson County Extension. Results from these tests provide helpful guidance in growing healthy plants and protecting soil and water.
Instructions on how to take a good soil samples
Two speaker series will run concurrently throughout the event. Experts will cover topics including native plants, lawn care, water quality, garden design, and creating habitats for birds and bees.
There’s fun planned for the kids, too – Stone Lion Puppets will entertain children with free shows.
The Healthy Yards Expo is hosted by Johnson County K-State Research and Extension, Johnson County Stormwater Management and the cities of Lenexa, Overland Park and Shawnee.
