Park University President Greg Gunderson, Ph.D., and City of Lenexa mayor Michael Boehm (left and right, respectively, in above photo) signed official documents during Lenexa’s city council meeting on Feb. 21. The University will have its Lenexa Campus at the Lenexa City Center inside the new city hall building, just west of 87th Street Parkway and I-435.
While the University has provided education opportunities for students in the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., for a number of years, the Lenexa location will be Park’s first physical campus in the State of Kansas. When the Lenexa Campus opens, the University will have 41 campus centers across the U.S., including 33 on military installations, as well as an extensive online program. The Lenexa Campus will be Park’s fourth location in the Kansas City area, along with downtown Kansas City, Mo., and Independence, Mo.
“Park University’s commitment to providing affordable and marketable degree programs has been enthusiastically supported for 141 years in the greater Kansas City community through our flagship Parkville Campus,” said Gunderson. “With the opening of Park’s Lenexa Campus, we are excited to expand our community partnerships while meeting more students’ needs through the transformative power of higher education.”
“The City of Lenexa’s community-wide planning document, Vision 2020, envisioned the city joining with a university to offer classes at city hall,” said Boehm. “We knew this partnership would bring energy to the space,
increase our evening population and exhibit our mixed-use vision for City Center. We are excited to welcome Park University, one of the most well-respected higher education institutions in our area, to Lenexa City Center. We look forward to welcoming students to campus this fall.”
Lenexa Civic CenterThe University’s Lenexa Campus will be housed on the third floor of the new Lenexa City Hall, incorporating 5,000 square feet of the building. The space
will include five classrooms, offices for staff and faculty, a collaboration space and kitchen/vending area. Park students at the Lenexa Campus will be able to take advantage of the new Lenexa Public Market, located on the first floor of the building, as well as an adjacent 500-stall parking garage. In addition, the Lenexa City Center Library, a part of the Johnson County Library system, will open in 2019, as part of Lenexa’s new civic campus.
