About the Chief

Chief Thomas Hongslo leads our department and has been employed in law enforcement since 1989. He was appointed Chief of Police in October 2012.

He has a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University and a master’s degree from Baker University. He is a graduate of the 232nd session of the FBI National Academy, the Senior Management Institute of Policing, University of Kansas Certified Public Manager Program and Leadership Kansas 2016.

Chief Hongslo is the past president of the Kansas City Metropolitan Police Chiefs and Sheriffs Association and serves on the Board of the Directors for the Kansas City Metropolitan Major Case Squad, Safehome and the University Of Kansas Public Management Center Law Enforcement Leadership Academy.  He also serves as a Police Chief Liaison for the Johnson County Multi-Jurisdictional Officer Involved Shooting Investigative Team.

Chief Hongslo is an active member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police Patrol and Tactical Committee and the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police Legislative Committee. 


About the Department

Our department is organized into two divisions, Patrol and Support Services Division, and a Special Projects and IT team.

Patrol Division

  • Commander: Major Frank Ise

The Patrol Division is the largest and most visible part of our department. It includes the following units: uniformed patrol, animal control, bicycle unit, crisis negotiations team, canine unit, school resource officers, tactical team, traffic safety, and the training unit. 

Support Services Division

  • Commander: Major David Brown

The Support Services Division is an integral part of our law enforcement response to crime and public safety. From answering 9-1-1 calls and helping officers respond efficiently and safely, to follow-up investigations and document and evidence management, we work closely with our partners and community to maintain a safe and vibrant community. The Support Services Division is comprised of dispatch, public service officers, general assignment detectives, financial crime detectives, special victim detectives, crime analytics, and technical services.

Special Projects and IT

  • Commander: Major Dawn Layman

The Special Projects and IT team is in charge of all special projects which have to do with not only IT within the Department, but also what technology is used by our officers on the streets. The staff is comprised of not only sworn officers, but also civilian employees.
