Frequently Asked Questions - Vision 2040

What is a community vision?

This process is an opportunity for the entire community to define the future it wants. Specifically, it will outline a path of continued success for the next 20+ years. It is citizen-based process that identifies core community values, goals and strategies and visualizes what the community “could be” or “should be” in 20+ years.

To complement these aspirations, the plan is grounded in an understanding of current conditions and trends. The vision plan will align all aspects of community life and identify goals and give Lenexa the long-term comprehensive perspective necessary to make rational and disciplined decisions on community issues as they arise.

Why does Lenexa need a vision plan?

In general, planning represents good stewardship. Lenexa has a well-deserved reputation as a good place to live, do business, attract visitors and have fun. Lenexa has previously done vision plans with Vision 2020 and Vision 2030. The Lenexa we enjoy today is the result of deliberate planning and commitment to following through on those plans. Progression is always happening and we must periodically pause to assess our current status and look to the future to ensure that we are pursuing a path of success for today and the future.

How is a community vision different from the city's comprehensive plan?

Our comprehensive plan is a long-term policy guide focused on physical aspects of the city, including land use, growth patterns, transportation, environment, and infrastructure. It is periodically reviewed and updated and serves as the foundation of the city’s zoning code, capital improvements plan, and many other specific plans and policies. In contrast, the vision plan has a longer and broader perspective, looking into the future and considering potential scenarios. Future updates to the comprehensive plan will align with the vision plan just as the current comprehensive plan is aligned with Vision 2020 and Vision 2030.

Vision 2040 will be driven by community’s insight and aspirations. Community engagement is an essential and relevant aspect of the vision plan process, and the final plan will be a product around which the community can identify and unify.

Why should I care?

As a resident, business or property owner in Lenexa, you have made an important choice to be in the city. If you like the community just the way it is, you should care because change is always happening. If you want aspects of the community advanced, you should care enough to help identify what needs to be addressed.

Who will lead the vision plan?

The City has appointed a diverse citizen steering committee to guide the process, which is being led by the City of Lenexa and community volunteers. The committee will work directly with the project team, staff and planning consultant Shockey Consulting, who were selected to facilitate the strategic planning process.

Is there a way for the public to be involved?

Absolutely! The project team is committed to conducting an open and inclusive process. There will be multiple opportunities for face-to-face dialogue and public workshops, and online interaction over the course of the project.

Sign up for our mailing list and follow our Facebook page to find out how you can get involved.

How long will the project last?

From its initial start, the entire planning process will span approximately six months. The public engagement process is kicking off in June of 2018 and there will be multiple opportunities to get involved in the planning process during 2018.
