New civic campus

After 20 years of dreaming, planning and building, the facilities at the Lenexa civic campus opened July 31, 2017.

The idea for a new walkable, mixed-use downtown was at the heart of Vision 2020, a citizen-led strategic planning process completed in 1997. These concepts have culminated in the Lenexa civic campus, an innovative district that incorporates a new city hall, Lenexa Rec Center, Lenexa Public Market and outdoor gathering spaces.

All City Hall offices and most Parks & Recreation administrative staff have moved.

About the market

The Lenexa Public Market is a unique feature of our new City Hall. This fully indoor marketplace will be a dynamic place where the community can connect around locally made food and goods, and where entrepreneurs have an opportunity to launch or grow a business.

The market will be home to a variety of permanent, short-term and pop-up merchants. About 85 percent of the market is devoted to food, beverages and restaurants, with the remaining merchants offering other handcrafted products. Our aim is to provide an ever-changing experience for visitors, and to stay on the pulse of food trends and the local maker scene.

Stay tuned for more information about cooking and craft classes that will be offered in our demonstration kitchen event space.

About the Rec Center

The Lenexa Rec Center is the new hub of the city’s offerings for fitness and fun. Visitors can experience a state-of-the-art community recreation center that is home to a walking track, leisure pool and classes for fitness and other areas of interest. Parks & Recreation administrative staff are also housed in the new facility.

Which services are staying at their current locations?

While many city departments have relocated to the new City Hall and Lenexa Rec Center, others continue to operate out of existing Lenexa facilities in east Lenexa.

Municipal Court (12400 W. 87th St. Pkwy.) and the Lenexa Police Department (12500 W. 87th St. Pkwy.) will remain at their current locations. The current City Hall building to the east will be closed to the public and used in the future as a public safety facility.

The Lenexa Community Center will remain open for activities, classes and rentals. Office hours will be 8 a.m.5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

September to Remember

We’ll celebrate the new campus with a grand opening this fall, dubbed “September to Remember.” This memorable month-long celebration will highlight all the Lenexa City Center has to offer, with live performances, food trucks, treats from Public Market vendors, kids activities, games, cooking demonstrations, touch-a-truck and so much more!

A special edition of TownTalk will arrive in your mailbox in mid-August outlining dozens of fun events planned for the month.
